The episode features historian, author, and filmmaker Amardeep Singh, whose remarkable journey led him to a lifelong mission of reconnecting communities with their roots and forgotten legacies.

Through years of research, travel, and storytelling, Amardeep has helped preserve Sikh heritage across borders and generations, inspiring people to rediscover their history and identity.

Fourteen years ago today, six innocent Sikh worshi Fourteen years ago today, six innocent Sikh worshippers were killed at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek because of hate. On August 5, 2012, a white supremacist walked into a sacred place of prayer and took lives that can never be replaced. Families were forever changed, a community was forever wounded, and yet the Sikh community responded with extraordinary courage, compassion, and grace. Their resilience has inspired people of every faith and background to stand together against hate.

Today, we remember: Paramjit Kaur, Prakash Singh, Ranjit Singh, Sita Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra, Panjab Singh ,and Satwant Singh Kaleka. We also honor the survivors, the first responders, and everyone who has carried this loss while continuing to build bridges of understanding and hope.

As our Executive Director reminds us:

“We shall never forget our Sikh siblings of Oak Creek-Wisconsin, gunned down by the hate loving white supremacists. At this 14th anniversary, we reaffirm our unconditional solidarity with the Sikh community and our shared commitment to fight hate with love & end it.”

Remembrance is not enough if we fail to act. Honoring Oak Creek means refusing to normalize bigotry, standing with communities targeted by hate, and choosing solidarity over silence. To our Sikh brothers and sisters: we remember. We mourn with you. We stand with you, not just today, but every day. May the memories of those we lost continue to be a blessing, and may we build a world where every person can worship in peace and dignity.

In remembrance. In solidarity. In love.

Sincerely,
South Asian Network Team

In honor of BIPOC Mental Health Awareness month, S In honor of BIPOC Mental Health Awareness month, SAN’s EMH team brings to you “When Therapy meets Tradition”

BIPOC Mental Health Awareness highlights the unique mental health struggles, systemic barriers, and historical trauma faced by communities of color, while advocating for culturally sensitive care.

Oftentimes, in our communities challenges with mental health can be seen as a personal weakness or moral failing. A lot of us grew up believing that asking for help meant something was wrong with us. That struggling should stay private. That healing was something you did quietly. But the thing is...our communities have always believed in mental wellness.

Lighting agarbatti, sharing chai with friends, oiling your hair, or listening to temple bells, qawwali, or classical music are just a few practices that have been woven into our traditions for centuries. These everyday rituals continue to bring a sense of comfort, connection, and cultural continuity across generations.

These traditions aren’t replacements for therapy or medical care. But they remind us that healing has always existed in our culture 🤍🪷

What today looked like! Standing up for what’s r What today looked like!

Standing up for what’s right rarely looks like the movies. More often, it looks like ordinary people showing up after work, between family responsibilities, and in the middle of busy lives because they know staying silent isn’t an option. Today our community gathered outside the Indian Consulate in Los Angeles for a vigil standing in solidarity with the students leading protests across India.

This was our small way of telling students in India: we see you, we hear you, and we’re with you. But it can’t end with one vigil or one post. Keep learning. Support the organizations on the ground that are documenting what’s happening and providing aid. Keep sharing their stories. Solidarity is something we choose, over and over again.

Students are demanding a more just, accessible, and equitable education system. Their voices deserve to be heard, and their right to organize must be respected. We call on student organizations, campuses, and communities across the United States to stand in solidarity with students in India.

The rights to peaceful assembly, protest, and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights. We stand in unconditional solidarity with the students of India whose courage, resilience, and collective action continue to inspire movements for justice around the world.

Many South Asian families navigate learning disabi Many South Asian families navigate learning disabilities and developmental delays in silence, not because support doesn’t exist, but because stigma often makes it harder to ask for help.

At our recent AWAZ Town Hall, families, caregivers, and community partners came together to talk openly about:
• Understanding developmental and behavioral needs in children
• Challenging stigma and denial in our communities
• Ways parents and caregivers can better support their children
• Emergency preparedness for families, including personalized planning, communication needs, local safety resources, and immigration-focused Know Your Rights information

A special thank you to representatives from @frankdlantermanrc, @westsidefrec, @kyccla and @apctc for sharing their expertise and connecting families with available resources.

These conversations help build stronger, more informed communities and remind families that seeking support is a sign of care, not weakness.
