Little Bangladesh Small Business Research Report
SAN is proud to launch SABZ (South Asian Small Business Support Program), a resource hub providing access to capital, technical assistance, training and coaching to small business owners/operators and entrepreneurs in Little Bangladesh and beyond.
SAN opened the Little Bangladesh Community Development Center on 154 S Vermont Ave, Los Angeles CA 90004 in July of 2023 with the assistance of the Los Angeles County Poverty Alleviation Initiative Grant. We hosted a festive Grand Opening in August of 2023! The grant has allowed us to work with community members at a grassroots level and identify ways of addressing their needs and the root causes of poverty. We are very excited to bring our years of relationship-building with the Little Bangladesh community together in such an impactful way.
According to 2020 Census data, over 5.4 million South Asians live in this country. California has the largest South Asian population of any state, & Los Angeles has the fourth largest South Asian population of any metropolitan area in the United States. Southern California’s South Asian community is mainly foreign-born. Groups with significant proportions of immigrants include Bangladeshis (83%), Sri Lankans (79%), Pakistanis (74%), & Indians (73%). Bangladeshi immigrants are among the most underserved South Asian groups in Southern California. These ethnic groups also have high rates of limited English proficiency (LEP). From 2000 to 2010, the number of LEP South Asians in Southern CA grew due to linguistic isolation, high level of poverty, lack of transportation access, limited knowledge of services & legal system.
Bangladeshi community members identified the following barriers to alleviating poverty: English language proficiency, lack of knowledge of basic computer skills, lack of knowledge of how to search for jobs/build resumes, and a lack of inexpensive childcare. Community members identified these barriers specifically for women/mothers and the need to have both parents working in order to alleviate poverty and begin to create savings for themselves and their families.
The Bangladeshi Communities project proposal is as follows:
Community members need a central location in which they can receive culturally and linguistically appropriate education and child care services.
A Community Center that can be a one stop shop for:
- Resume/career building skills, interview skills
- Basic computer skills (create an email, utilize word processing/excel, search and submit job applications)
- Financial literacy and budgeting 101
- English as a second language classes
- Public benefits application assistance such as CalWORKS,
- Proper technical skills in order to retrieve better paying jobs.
The initial phase will also be to secure 10 long-term Bangla-speaking volunteers to host a series of in-person classes on the topics previously mentioned, designating two classes a week for each topic for a duration of 8 weeks. Classes will be held in the evening hours on weekdays as well as on the weekends in order to reach more community members in need.
Community members wish to achieve the following outcomes:
- Increased capacity to understand and speak English, especially for women
- Basic understanding of computer and browsing knowledge (how to create an email, search, utilize word processing and excel)
- Have a strong resume, interview skills and confidence as well as an understanding of where and how to apply for jobs
- Knowledge of public benefits, stress and anxiety coping mechanisms
- Better paying jobs to support themselves and their families, a better understanding of finances and how to budget and save money
- Community building in the form of increased social interaction, sharing best practices and employment opportunities from one community member to another
We plan to host a Job Fair in the Spring of 2024. SAN will work with community leaders and partners to host employers and companies looking for prospective employees in Downtown Los Angeles.

সাউথ এশিয়ান নেটওয়ার্কের উদ্যোগে, লস এঞ্জেলস কাউন্টি দারিদ্র্য বিমোচন অনুদানের সহায়তা্ ২০২৩ সালের জুলাই মাসে ১৫৪ সাউথ ভারমন্ট এভিনিউতে (লস এঞ্জেলস, ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া ৯০০০৪) লিটল বাংলাদেশ কমিউনিটি ডেভেলপমেন্ট সেন্টারের পথচলা শুরু হয়েছে। এ উপলক্ষ্যে একই বছরের অগাস্ট মাসে আমরা উৎসবমুখর পরিবেশে আমাদের নতুন শাখার কার্যালয়ের গ্র্যান্ড ওপেনিং এর আয়োজন করি। উক্ত অনুদানের মাধ্যমে আমরা তৃণমূল পর্যায়ে কমিউনিটির সদস্যদের সাথে কাজ করে তাদের দারিদ্র্য সহ অন্যান্য সমস্যার মূল কারণ চিহ্নিত করে; সেইসব সমস্যা সমাধানের লক্ষ্যে যথাযথ উদ্যোগ গ্রহণের সুযোগ পেয়েছি। লিটল বাংলাদেশ কমিউনিটির সাথে আমাদের দীর্ঘদিনের সম্পর্ককে এত সুন্দর একটা কার্যকর উদ্যোগের মাধ্যমে উদযাপন করতে পেরে আমরা সত্যিই অনেক আনন্দিত।
২০২০ সালের আদমশুমারির তথ্য মোতাবেক যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে ৫.৪ মিলিয়নের বেশি সাউথ এশিয়ান বাস করেন। স্টেটগুলোর মধ্যে সবচাইতে বেশি সংখ্যক সাউথ এশিয়ান বাস করেন ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায়। আর যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মেট্রোপলিটন এলাকাগুলোর মধ্যে সাউথ এশিয়ানদের সংখ্যার হিসেবে লস এঞ্জেলসের স্থান চতুর্থ। সাউদারন ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায় বসবাসরত সাউথ এশিয়ান কমিউনিটির বেশিরভাগ সদস্যরা মূলত অভিবাসী। উল্লেখযোগ্য সংখ্যক অভিবাসীদের মধ্যে আছেন, বাংলাদেশি (৮৩%), শ্রীলংকান (৭৯%), পাকিস্তানি (৭৪%), ইন্ডিয়ান (৭৩%)। সাউদারন ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায় সাউথ এশিয়ান দেশগুলোর মধ্যে বাংলাদেশি অভিবাসীরা সবচাইতে কম সুবিধাপ্রাপ্ত একটি গোষ্ঠি। সাউথ এশিয়ান কমিউনিটির সদস্যদের মধ্যে ইংরেজি ভাষা দক্ষতার (এলইপি) ক্ষেত্রে উল্লেখযোগ্য মাত্রায় সীমাবদ্ধতা রয়েছে। ২০০০ সাল থেকে ২০১০ সাল পর্যন্ত ভাষাজনিত বিচ্ছিন্নতা, উচ্চমাত্রার দারিদ্র্য, সঠিক পরিবহন ব্যবস্থার অভাব, সামগ্রিক পরিষেবা এবং আইনি সাহায্যের বিষয়ে সীমিত জ্ঞানের কারণে সাউদারন ক্যালিফোর্নিয়াতে ইংরেজি ভাষায় অদক্ষ এশিয়ানদের সংখ্যা আরো বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে।
বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা তাদের দারিদ্র বিমোচনের ক্ষেত্রে বেশ কিছু প্রতিবন্ধকতা চিহ্নিত করেছেন। সেগুলো হলো- ইংরেজি ভাষায় অদক্ষতা, প্রাথমিক কম্পিউটার জ্ঞানে অদক্ষতা, কীভাবে চাকরি খোঁজা যায়/সিভি তৈরি করা যায় সেই বিষয়ে জ্ঞানের অভাব, এবং সুলভ চাইল্ডকেয়ারের অভাব। বিশেষতঃ নারীরা এইসব প্রতিবন্ধকতার সম্মুখীন বেশি হচ্ছেন বলে কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা জানিয়েছেন। নারীদের পিছিয়ে পড়ার কারণে পরিবারগুলোতে স্বামী-স্ত্রী দুজনে একযোগে কাজ করতে পারছেন না, যা তাদের সঞ্চয়ে প্রভাব ফেলছে এবং দারিদ্র বিমোচনের পথ আরো দীর্ঘ ও কঠিন হচ্ছে।
সুতরাং, বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির দারিদ্র্য বিমোচনের লক্ষ্যে আমাদের প্রকল্প প্রস্তাব হলোঃ
কমিউনিটির সদস্যদের এমন একটি সেন্টার প্রয়োজন যেখানে তারা সাংস্কৃতিক ও ভাষাগতভাবে উপযুক্ত শিক্ষা ও চাইল্ড কেয়ারের সুবিধা পাবে।
এমন একটি কমিউনিটি সেন্টার আমাদের দরকার যা ‘ওয়ান স্টপ শপের’ আদলে কমিউনিটি মেম্বারদের বিভিন্ন প্রয়োজনীয় বিষয়ে সাহায্য করবে; যেমনঃ
- চাকরির জন্য রেজিউম/জীবনবৃত্তান্ত লেখা,
- ক্যারিয়ার গঠনের দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধি এবং ইন্টারভিউ দক্ষতা,
- দ্বিতীয় ভাষা হিসেবে ইংরেজি শিক্ষার ক্লাস,
- মৌলিক কম্পিউটার দক্ষতা (ইমেইল খোলা, ওয়ার্ড এবং এক্সেল ব্যবহারে দক্ষতা, কাজ খোঁজা এবং আবেদন পত্র অনলাইনে সাবমিট করা্
- পাবলিক বেনেফিটের আবেদনে সহায়তা; যেমন- ক্যালওয়ার্কস ,
- অর্থনৈতিক বোঝাপড়া বৃদ্ধি এবং সঠিকভাবে পরিবারের বাজেট তৈরির প্রাথমিক জ্ঞান ,
- ভালো বেতনের কাজ পাওয়ার জন্য যথাযথ প্রযুক্তিগত দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধি।
প্রাথমিক পর্যায়ে, দীর্ঘমেয়াদে ১০ জন বাংলা ভাষাভাষী স্বেচ্ছাসেবকের সাহায্যে উপরে উল্লেখিত বিষয়গুলো নিয়ে সিরিজ ক্লাসের আয়োজন করা হবে যেখানে কমিউনিটির সদস্যদেরকে হাতে কলমে প্রশিক্ষণ দেয়া হবে। প্রতিটি বিষয়ের জন্য আট সপ্তাহব্যাপী প্রশিক্ষনের ব্যবস্থা হবে এবং প্রতি সপ্তাহে দুটি ক্লাসের আয়োজন করা হবে। আমাদের ক্লাসগুলো হবে সন্ধ্যায় যেন কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা নিজেদের প্রয়োজনীয় কাজ শেষে ক্লাসে অংশ নিতে পারেন।
কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা আশা করেন এই প্রশিক্ষণগুলোর শেষে সদস্যরা নিম্নে উল্লেখিত ফলাফলগুলো অর্জন করতে পারবেঃ
১। ইংরেজি বোঝার এবং ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার ক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি পাবে (বিশেষতঃ নারীদের জন্য)
২। কম্পিউটার এবং ইন্টারনেট অপারেটিং এর ব্যাপারে প্রাথমিক জ্ঞানলাভ করবে ( ইমেইল একাউন্ট তৈরি, ইন্টারনেটের সঠিক ব্যবহার এবং ওয়ার্ড আর এক্সেল সংক্রান্ত দক্ষতা)।
৩। চাকরির জন্য একটা ফলপ্রসূ রেজুম/জীবনবৃত্তান্ত তৈরি করতে পারবে।
৪। বিভিন্ন সরকারি সুবিধাদি সম্পর্কে পরিষ্কার ধারণা পাবে, যা তাদেরকে চাপ এবং উদ্বেগমুক্ত থাকতে সাহায্য করবে।
৫। নিজের এবং পরিবারের জীবনমান উন্নয়নে আরো ভালো বেতনের চাকরির সুযোগ বাড়বে। সেই সাথে সঠিক বাজেটিং এবং অর্থনৈতিক জ্ঞান তাদেরকে আরো আত্মবিশ্বাসী করে তুলবে।
৬। ইতিবাচক সামাজিক যোগাযোগ বৃদ্ধির মাধ্যমে কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা একে অন্যকে চাকরি সহ নানান ক্ষেত্রে সাহায্যের হাত বাড়িয়ে দেবে যার ফলে একটি সমৃদ্ধ, শান্তিপূর্ণ ও সচেতন কমিউনিটি তৈরি হবে।
২০২৪ সালের স্প্রিং-এ আমরা একটা চাকরিমেলার আয়োজন করতে যাচ্ছি। এই লক্ষ্যকে সামনে রেখে, কমিউনিটির নেতা এবং অন্যান্য সংগঠনের সহযোগিতায় সাউথ এশিয়ান নেটওয়ার্ক লস এঞ্জেলস- ডাউনটাউনের এই মেলায় নিয়োগকর্তা এবং বিভিন্ন চাকরিদাতা কোম্পানিগুলোকে আমন্ত্রণ জানাবে। এই মেলার মাধ্যমে প্রশিক্ষণপ্রাপ্ত কমিউনিটির সসদ্যরা নিয়োগকর্তাদের সাথে সরাসরি যোগাযোগ করতে পারবেন।
